There’s just one week to go until our next Reading SOUP event on Wednesday 15 March and we’re excited to announce our pitchers for the evening!

In celebration of today’s International Women’s Day, Reading SOUP are proud to welcome three community projects who provide valuable support to women and children in Reading.

Pitching for funding will be: ABC to READ, Berkshire Women’s Aid and TransforME.

ABC to READ brings support to children with significant reading problems in over 100 schools across Reading and Berkshire. If they were to win funding at Reading SOUP, it would be used to train additional volunteer fieldworkers and purchase focused reading materials.

Berkshire Women’s Aid works against domestic abuse and violence, providing advice, counselling and places of safety in Reading and Berkshire. In February, Reading Borough Council proposed a 22% cut in funding to Berkshire Women’s Aid. The decision is still under consultation with Reading Borough Council.

TransforME is an inclusive exercise group who help women embrace exercise, get fitter and healthier through affordable fitness sessions and coaching. They’re pitching for a project to help subsidise exercise sessions for 18-25-year-old women in Reading: 8 weeks worth of exercise sessions just £10.

Reading SOUP is a grassroots, community fundraising project. We support and promote causes, projects and creative ideas in the Reading area. We’re inspired by the original Detroit SOUP. At our events, our audience vote for their chosen pitch and the winning project receives all the proceeds from the entry fee (£5/person) towards their cause. And, of course, everyone gets a bowl, or two, of soup!

As well as these three great pitches, SOUPers can check out an art display from Yun-Yun Li and Kavitha Balakrishnan, students at Reading University, and enjoy live music from Reading-based singer-songwriter Cat Brooks. From the kitchen, there will be two yummy vegan SOUPs, a Moroccan Chickpea and a Parsnip and Potato soup, along with tea and coffee or soft drinks.

Come and warm up with a bowl of soup and support three very important local community projects with Reading SOUP.
